In the first part of the tour, you will visit the Doge’s Palace, magnificent masterpiece of gothic art, where the secrets of the Doge and his Council are conserved: a building that represented the pulse of La Serenissima’s political power. You will stop to admire the Golden Staircase, and be dazzled by the gilt stuccowork and paintings that wind along the ramps leading to the Ducal Apartment and the chambers of the Venetian government, theGreat Council Room, which was the seat of Bridge of Sighs linking the palace’s Judiciary chambers with the New Prisons ... where even you might let a sigh escape you at the astonishingly lovely view of the lagoon and the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, as did the condemned men when they were led off to prison.
In the second part of the tour, you will visit the Basilica of San Marco, one of the symbols of Byzantine art, of Christianity, and of the magnificence of the thousand years of the Republic of Venice: come to discover the more than 1000 m2 of gold leaf mosaics that earned it the name “Golden Basilica”, its decorative flooring with precious polychrome marble inlay, and its long history which saw its transformation from palatine chapel to Cathedral. The tour will also allow you to admire the Pala d’Oro,a magnificent Byzantine work made of gold and decorated with precious gemstones and enamels set around images of Jesus Christ during his apostolic period. It was commissioned from renowned Greek goldsmiths in AD 978 and was displayed during the most important rites celebrated in the Basilica of San Marco.
